21st Century learners

Introduction

Some people say that students today are different to the past. Others say these differences are not as important as other considerations. In this task you are going to investigate this issue and apply your understanding of them to the creation of materials for a specific group of students.

Task

In a group of three, you are going to create a multimedia set of materials for a specified group of learners. You are also required to, individually, write a rationale for the materials outlining the main ideas teachers need to consider when planning for learning with students today. You need to be thinking about:
  1. How might students today be different to students in the past?
  2. What are the reasons for these differences?
  3. What are the dangers of giving students labels?
  4. Are there any other ways of approaching education other than labeling them 21st Century learners?
  5. How can you design materials that cater to everyone's needs?

Process

In order to make your materials you need to do the following steps:

  • Reading
  1. how would you answer the first 2 questions above? Add your ideas here.
  2. break up the reading between members of your group
  3. read the articles 'Digital natives, digital immigrants' and 'Are students today really different?' , 'The Digital Divide' and 'Closing the digital divide' Note:
  4. make notes outlining the main ideas from the articles
  5. Discussion Task: What links can you make to the previous task relating specifically to 21st Century Skills and Knowledge Age Learning practice?

  • Deciding on a target audience
  1. as a group choose a group of students and a subject (example: Year 1, History)
  2. Then choose a topic in that subject. (example: The great fire of London)
  3. Link to an example curriculum document
  • Designing the materials
  1. decide on the technology you will require when creating your materials.
  2. Find an online tutorial describing how you can use your chosen technology and embed it on the Online Tutorials Page
  • Creating the materials
  1. create your set of multimedia materials
  • Writing your rationale
  1. On your own write a rationale using the readings as source materials to explain how your group designed your materials.

Presentation

Save your groups materials and your individual rationale to your portfolio page.
